Atmosphere

Live Bands Create the Perfect Atmosphere

Looking to set a lively and festive tone? A live band is an excellent choice. For a more relaxed atmosphere, consider hiring a solo musician. Live music can really help to establish the vibe you're aiming for. Don't forget that live music can also create an intimate setting. The personal touch of live musicians will make your guests feel special and give them moments to cherish, especially during significant occasions like walking down the aisle or the first dance.

It looks so peaceful now, but in a country rent asunder in 1862, Fort Donelson was the scene of a Civil War battle. Today, the battlefield and cemetery serve as a reminder of both the atrocities of war and the necessity of fighting for the greater good.

There are many well-known Civil War sites and battlefields in the American South. Right here in Tennessee you’ll find Shiloh Battlefield in southwest Tennessee, Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Stones River National Battlefield in Murfreesboro, Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park and Nashville’s Fort Negley. While Nashvillians are familiar with the name Donelson, many Tennesseans may know less about Fort Donelson National Battlefield, located northwest of Nashville in Dover, Tenn. Here's a brief look at the story of Fort Donelson and what visitors can find, do and learn here.

History of Fort Donelson

During the Civil War, the Cumberland River was a major access artery, and its protection against invasion by the Union was a vital concern for the Confederacy. Fort Donelson was built to guard the river from attack, just as nearby Fort Henry was built to protect the Tennessee River.

But on Feb. 6, 1862, Union soldiers — led by a relatively unknown (at the time) general named Ulysses S. Grant — set their sights on taking Fort Donelson. At first, the Union army and navy was blasted by heavy artillery from the fort’s two batteries. After initially holding off the Union, the Confederates made the fatal mistake of retreating to safety, leaving behind a weakened line to guard against their enemy. The next morning, Grant demanded “unconditional and immediate” surrender from his longtime friend Confederate General Simon Buckner. The surrender took place at Dover Hotel, which served as headquarters for Gen. Buckner and as a Union hospital following his surrender.

Today, the beauty and serenity of the battlefield site is at odds with the reality of war. In 1928, the area was designated as a national military park and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.

Visitors can tour the battlefield, explore the preserved river batteries, stroll through the National Cemetery and learn more about the battle that took place here. While much of the structure is not original, the nearby Dover Hotel (also known as The Surrender House) has been architecturally restored and includes a number of exhibits that offer visitors a closer look at the campaign that took place here.

In addition to the history lesson found here, the area also affords peaceful views of the Cumberland River, 7 miles of hiking trails and a variety of wildlife (including nesting bald eagles). A 6-mile self-guided tour of the battlefield is available, along with a brochure to explain the stops along the way. At the visitors center (temporarily located at the Stewart County Visitor Center, 117 Visitor Center Lane, Dover), a short film, Fort Donelson: Gateway to the Confederate Heartland, tells the story of Grant and Buckner’s friendship.

Wreaths Across America

For an extra special experience at Fort Donelson, some visitors may want to plan their visit on or just after Dec. 15, when, for the third consecutive year, volunteers for Wreaths Across America will place wreaths at Fort Donelson National Cemetery. The goal is increase the number of wreaths to 1,000 (double last year’s number of 500).

Whether it’s for the history lesson, the scenic vistas, the walking trails or the wildlife, Fort Donelson is one of those places off the beaten path that is definitely worth a visit.
